The article presents the results of research of the essence of current assets and analyzes different approaches to their interpretation that have been developed in modern science. This has made it possible to group thoughts of many authors and researchers and to give more complete and precise definition of “current assets”, “working capital” and “operating assets” as notions. Also, the authors have analyzed the economic interpretation of the role and importance of working capital in historical perspective, examined the genesis of scientific thought, solved the main components of current assets, and provided basic indicators that characterize the effectiveness of their use. Application of received knowledge will give an opportunity for effective management of working capital at the enterprises.
